The brief
What the project needed
Set in a Monmouthshire conservation area, this substantial Georgian stone house needed eight of its windows replacing sympathetically. The priority was to match the existing property exactly and satisfy conservation requirements — retaining the character of the original sashes — while improving comfort and performance.

The craft involved
The elevation presented several demands of traditional joinery. The window heads are gently cambered (curved), and the gable carries a distinctive arched window — both requiring made-to-measure sashes rather than standard units. Working across a tall three-storey frontage in red sandstone, every window had to match the existing proportions, sightlines and glazing pattern so the replacements would read as authentic from the approach.

The finished work
The completed windows sit naturally within the historic stone, their slim cream frames and fine glazing bars true to the period. Slimline 14mm double-glazed units with 20mm timber-masked glazing bars deliver modern warmth and weather performance while keeping the authentic appearance — the curved heads and arched gable window reproduced faithfully. The finished windows match the existing property closely, and the client was very satisfied with the result.
